Possibly, the root cause of Postmodernism is a fear of love. By love I mean all human relationships, sexual, familial and friendships.
Attributed to this is our lack of faith in human nature, humanity.
These attitudes, backed up by the "freedoms" of technology and the repetitiveness of the media (persistent knowledge for the sake of money/power) have put us in a situation where we must, yet cannot (fully) escape that, that we invariably consist of.
Contrivance rather than humanness((perceived) authenticity) is, for now, our unreliable friend.
